My third revelation was in Mali, on a night we spent with a griot, which is the word for the storytellers who have been responsible for orally preserving the legends, battles and traditions of their peoples since the middle ages. All night long we sat around the crackling fire and were transported to the birth of the empire of Mali and the heroic figure of the Lion of Mali, which united the small groups of people against the bloodthirsty enemy.
