I no longer know for sure which memories are real and which are images of stories we've been told. I don't know how many times I've heard that when I was a baby, to get me to sleep my grandfather would hold me in his arms in front of my grandmother's Limoges dinnerware display cabinet and tell me the story of each set! We aren't usually able to treasure such early memories, but I swear I can feel my grandfather's voice as he talked cheek to cheek with me, as if we were dancing a waltz, going over the fables of that fine porcelain. Today he would tell me the story of a leopard, a zebra and an African crane in an oasis of palm trees, and I would close my eyes, purring like a cat, and fall asleep feeling his voice again.
