When painting goes beyond artistic expression to represent a people's identity, art is intertwined with race, rebellion, war, resistance and pride. The African Ndebele learned to dress their houses, caves and bodies in colours and geometric shapes to reinforce their identity with neighbouring tribes and whites encroaching on them for the last four centuries. I like to surround myself with their signs and know that it's not just aesthetic. Sometimes I can even hear their chanting, which gives me strength to face my day and my fears.
