Before linen was linen it was a herbaceous plant, and while it was the flax plant it chose to be the fibres, because if it had been the seed it would not be called linen but linseed and it would have ended up as an oil or flour. But it chose to be fibre and linen was made, the oldest known textile.

Good linen can be discerned at a distance by the way it hangs with propriety and pride over a well-set table when it is a tablecloth. It is soft and distinguished, and we have dyed it in beautiful colours for it to settle in our kitchens as tablecloths, napkins, and kitchen towels.
