It's odd that we build civilizations with little care for what we're building on. The short but intense history of cement or 'hydraulic' floor tiles is a perfect example.

Showcased at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867, they became such a feature of the Catalan Modernist movement that the great painters and architects of the day would design their own. Later, fashion turned against cement tiles and they were covered over. I'm not complaining - the rediscovery of these floors in more recent times has been fascinating.

I pay a little tribute to every dull parquet floor or pavement that has been taken up to reveal these jewels of Modernism buried by a rather limited trend. Here’s to the rebirth of mosaic floors in our time and in our homes, because they didn’t deserve to disappear and we deserved to look after and worship them.
