Two women in India, one in Hyderabad and the other in Bangalore, and the short story of some woollen blankets.

Both were used to working with the West, both were thirty years old, and both came into my life on one of my trips to India. We became friends and on one of our walks we came across a factory of wonderful woollen blankets, though not before dodging a few sacred cows along the way.

Anisha, the woman from Bangalore, was folding her blanket while she talked about her German fiancé. This year I received some of her wedding photos. Betsy, the woman from Hyderabad, was running her hands over her blanket while she revealed that her family didn't approve of her relationship with her boyfriend and she would never be able to marry him. A husband would be forced on her and she wouldn't even consider going against them.

When I wrap myself in my the soft wool of my Indian blanket and let its shapes and colours carry me away I remember them, and the different ways there are to be a woman depending on where we were born.
