Kashmir shawls that British soldiers brought back for their wives from the Indies. Everybody who was anybody had a Kashmir shawl, and their greatest ambassador was actually Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon Bonaparte's wife. However, the highly sophisticated Tibetan designs carried a very high price tag so Europeans began to imitate them. The Scottish town of Paisley became the centre of these designs, giving them its name as well as great prestige.
