Europe was thirsty for Indian textiles. Chintz - fabric printed with floral, fruit and bird motifs - was so coveted that while Indian factories struggled to satisfy demand, European industry was floundering. Not a problem for an absolutist king! In 1686, Louis XIV, the Sun King, banned its import and manufacture, until 1759 when they managed to imitate it.

Our Toile de Palmiers is an interpretation of the colonial era: the palm trees symbolise the exotic new world, and the ornaments the finesse of the imperial court.
